All those questions you want to ask…
What types of dancing do you do?
We draw our inspiration from many dance styles – ballroom, Latin American, Spanish, Jazz, African, linedance, country dancing and free style. Since we aim our classes at those with little or no dance experience, the choreographies are kept simple and are generally danced as solo dances. Some dances make use of formations and groups. We vary the dances in a single class so you could be doing a simple jive, followed by a jazz dance, a march or a waltz. We always start off our classes with warmups, some technique and cardio exercises, followed by 1-3 routines and then a cooldown. The pace will depend on the level of fitness and dance-readiness of the class.
How do I register for a class?
Check with us if you would like to join a class so as to ensure that we can accommodate you. Turn up 5-10 minutes before the class to complete a registration form and make payment. We recommend that first-timers join for a single class and then decide whether they would like to take a 5- or 10-class card. We have also introduced absolute beginners courses and recommend that first-timers attend these as experience has shown that it is much easier to integrate into our existing classes when you have completed a course. Courses are usually 5 -6 weeks in length (1 hour per week).
You can mix-and-match your classes – since we use a class card system you will only pay for the classes you attend and that can be at any of our venues. So, if you want to try different classes at different times or venues, no problem. Short courses are payable in advance by EFT or payment at the first class. Check our bank details on this website (at the bottom of the Class Schedules and Costs page). Feel free to email Tina if you have more questions.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes in which you can move – gym clothes, T-shirt, pants and takkies. Once you have decided that Dancing Divas is for you, we recommend that you buy split sole trainers. These are available from the Ballet Barre (Groenkloof) or from Mr Price Sport. Bring a sweat towel and water, you may need them!
Where will I find parking?
Both our venues have ample parking.
Pretoria East: The shopping centre has open parking on the ground level with parking guards during the day and a 24/7 security service. You can also use the undercover parking in the basement. There is an elevator which takes you directly to outside our studio on the Upper Level.
Centurion: There is ample parking as the hall is located at the Library and local municipal offices. Arrangements will be made with a security guard to keep an eye on the car park.
I am not that fit / I am not very coordinated / I have never danced before. Will I cope in the classes?
We get asked this question all the time. What can we say? Just about everyone does cope but it may take some longer than others, depending on your basic level of fitness and ability. Will you improve? ABSOLUTELY……. but that will depend on you, the level of effort you put into it, and on whether you attend regularly or not. Have patience and give yourself time - for many of you it may be the first time that you are dancing, and your bodies and brains have to get used to thinking and moving differently. With time you will see the Dancing Diva in you emerge (and what a pleasure that we can be there to watch the little miracle unfold)!
You only seem to have classes in Pretoria (South Africa)?
True – we opened our doors in January 2009 with one venue, a small group of budding Dancing Divas and a lot of rented halls. We have just moved to our very own studio in Pretoria East and have a second venue in Centurion, with loads more Dancing Divas who regularly attend our classes. Our ambitions are to launch countrywide so …… if you see yourself as a passionate, caring and enthusiastic dancer (35+) and you would like to join us as an instructor, contact Tina and let’s talk.
